USCIS Designates TPS for Nationals of Syria

On March 23, 2013, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced her intent to designate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of the Syrian Arab Republic (Syria) in response to the deteriorating situation in the country. TPS for Syrians goes into effect March 29, 2012 and continues for a period of 18 months ending September 30, 2013. Registration for TPS must occur during the 180 day registration period ending September 25, 2012. Syrian nationals who have been continually physically present since March 29, 2012 are eligible for TPS. Thos with criminal records or deemed a threat to national security are not eligible. TPS beneficiaries are eligible for temporary status and employment authorization.
