USCIS announced it has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of Haiti for an additional 18 months. USCIS has also extended the suspension of certain requirements for Haitian nationals to receive F-1 status. The extension of Haitian TPS will begin January 23, 2012 through July 22, 2014. Haitian nationals were designated eligible for TPS on January 21, 2010 following major earthquakes which devastated the country. Haitian nationals who continuously resided in the United States since January 12, 2011 and hold TPS status are eligible to extend their status. Registration must occur within the 60 day period ending November 30, 2012. The 18 month extension also allows Haitian nationals to apply for employment authorization. DHS also announces extension of the suspension of certain requirements for F-1 student visas for Haitian nationals. Haitian F-1 holders will be permitted to obtain employment authorization, work an extended number of hours while school is in session, and reduce course load.
