May 2025 — Washington, DC
Vishal Chander, Principal Attorney at The Chander Law Firm PC, participated in the 2025 Lobby Day of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), held May 20–21 in Washington, D.C. The event brought together attorneys and advocates from across the country to meet with members of Congress and their staff to advance legislation that support the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community.
As Co-Chair of the Issues Committee of the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY), alongside Rachel Lee, Vishal joined a delegation of AABANY members to represent the voices of New York’s AANHPI legal community on Capitol Hill. The delegation met with staff from the offices of Senator Chuck Schumer, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, and Congressman George Latimer, among others.
Advocating for Civil Rights, Immigration, and Equal Access
During Lobby Day, Vishal and his colleagues urged Congress to support a range of legislative priorities, including:
- Codifying language access protections under Executive Order 13166 to ensure meaningful access to federally funded services for individuals with limited English proficiency.
- Passing the Fred Korematsu legislative package, which includes a Congressional Gold Medal, a federal day of recognition, and a civil liberties protection act to honor Korematsu’s legacy and prevent discriminatory detention.
- Recognizing Vietnamese American Day (May 23) and supporting the Teach AANHPI History Act to ensure that the contributions of AANHPI communities are represented in K–12 curricula.
- Defending the rule of law and access to justice by increasing funding for the Legal Services Corporation and protecting the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
- Promoting a fair and humane immigration system by supporting the NO BAN Act, the Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act, and the Access to Counsel Act, while opposing discriminatory bills like the Stop CCP Visas Act.
Centering AANHPI Voices in Public Policy
The event also featured remarks by several AANHPI members of Congress, including Senator Mazie Hirono, Congressman Ted Lieu, Congresswoman Grace Meng, and Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, who shared their commitment to advancing the legislative goals of the AANHPI community.
The Chander Law Firm PC congratulates Vishal on his continued leadership and advocacy at the national level and remains committed to advancing justice, equity, and opportunity for all.
